- In 2021 Japanese superstar Kanoa Igarashi came back hungrier than ever in pursuit of his maiden WSL Championship Tour title. Beyond The Lines takes us behind the scenes on Kanoa’s journey.
Kanoa Igarashi is the quintessential global citizen. Japanese, but having grown up in Huntington Beach, California, these days Kanoa spends as much time living in Portugal as he does anywhere else on earth. He speaks four languages (and counting), and since claiming a maiden WSL Championship Tour victory in Bali in 2019 the natural footer's star has shot into the stratosphere.
His success in Indonesia couldn't have been timed better; along with close friend, travel partner and videographer Tanner Carney, Kanoa had just started filming an unnamed, fly on the wall look at his life on the road. As he hoisted the trophy over Balinese black sand Beyond The Lines was born, with an opening episode that couldn't have been better scripted.
As we all know too well things went a little awry in 2020, and after an entertaining opening series Beyond The Lines, much like the world itself, was momentarily paused. A year later and although not yet smooth sailing, the world slowly started to right itself. The WSL pulled together a slimmed down version of the Championship Tour and the 2020 Games were held in Tokyo, which for hometown hero Kanoa was the greatest opportunity yet to put his name up in lights.
Our man Tanner tagged along for the ride once again, from the season opener at Pipeline in Hawaii on to Australia and through Mexico and the US, all via Japan and the Tokyo Games. To say the result is entertaining would be selling the 40-minute edit short, Kanoa's trust in Tanner is on full display as he puts himself out there and lets his friend do the rest.

KanoA is an incredible talent, a true humble frother who exudes a Grom like Yoda wisdom. His surfing is so diverse and adaptable to all conditions and never holds back.
I think all he needs to do though for once is to let himself off the hook and to stop self internalising the pressure of the spectacle of the big stage...
My biggest advice for him would be to go and get absolutely shit faced the night before a big event and go surf while still half cut. He surfs best when he knows he’s the underdog. When he expects nothing. He wants to be “calm” and relaxed in the moment - however that’s like a dog chasing his tail. You cannot achieve true zen mind set until you don’t “try” to achieve it...
He’s a young guy in a big wide world performing at the highest level. Perhaps he needs to reframe his perspective and know that he is already good enough!
He should go on some all nighters prior and during some big events. Life is short and I worry that he will miss the bigger picture should he not let loose and experience girls, parties and even surfing a single fin, a mal, body surfing ...so many ways of experiencing the vibrating ocean.

Konoa will no doubt be a world champion but it will happen when he least expects it. When he’s able to become the true Mr Miagi that is inside of him...perhaps his outer shell of stress, self critique and all out attack is all that’s in the way.
I feel as if this year his hidden Miagi will be in need of getting his hair wet 😉👀💫🤜🏻🤛🏼🤙🏼☯️🍻🍹 🍵🏄🏽♂️🎟🧘🏼♂️🐝🆓

Kanoa, To get to the total top of your game, let our Heavenly Father be whom you seek to make proud. You need no praise from anyone else. Focus on being your best for him and doing good for others out of love, acceptance of all that happens to you and most off all faith and trust in it. You can win so big if you apply this at your young age. West
Amazing video, I love Kanoa, BUT that noise that goes along the entire documentary is super annoying. I understand the type of vibe you're trying to transmit but it's literally on top of the whole film and it's super super loud. But the rest of the edit it's fire.

Kanoa is the most arrogant, cocky, too good for anybody other than him and his friends in the water. Seen him show up to localized line ups and try to paddle circles around people and burn the groms. When he was called out about it he had some smart ass comment. Kid needs to learn to stay humble and be grateful that he had parents that invested all their time to make sure he is where he is now.
